Eli and I started dating over 12 years ago. We met at a concert at a little white church. He was always the guy on stage playing music and I was always his biggest fan that admired him from afar. Finally, after some time our friend introduced us and since then we have been in each other lives. We love to play basketball as a family, hike, travel, eat a lot of Sol Food and garden together. We also love eating screamin mimis ice cream as a family as our treat. (They have non dairy options yay!)
No one can deny it can be stressful to write your own vows, however, it is also so moving and beautiful to do so. Here are some tips on how to write your own vows below.
Give yourself time to write your vows. It does not have to be weeks, just set aside a day and get away to your favorite quiet spot (ocean, woods, desert) and go for it. Feeling rushed will just cause more stress to you, so go to your favorite spot and maybe even bring your favorite food to encourage you to stick with it.
Write your vows on a random piece of paper first before you write it in the nice vow book. You most likely will have multiple drafts or will cross out things before getting exactly what you want to say out there.
I have seen vows spoken at this point in my career and life over 100 times. There is no right or wrong usually people follow this approach or fully choose to do only a funny lead up to the vows or fully a sentimental lead up to the vows. The flow of most vows go:
A sentimental opening statement about your loved one
A funny story about you guys as a couple
Nostalgic story about the past of you two
Ending with what you promise to your loved one (your vows)
Read them aloud into the mirror or to a friend to practice how you will say it aloud. You will be nervous and possibly crying on your wedding day so practicing a couple times will help with the nerves a little on the wedding day when reading them in front of a crowd.
Celebrate writing your own vows. Grab yourself some chocolate or go out to dinner as a couple to celebrate one more step closer to being a married couple.
